WHAT IS PSYCHOTHERAPY?
(Pat Frankish)

Psychotherapy is a process by which a person is helped to communicate and focus on their feelings and emotions, with the goal of eventually finding that these can change with experience.

Although this at first sounds simple, we all know that the world of feelings is a complicated one, which can sometimes be frightening, painful and upsetting to think about, especially if the feelings are leading to behaviors which are unpleasant or destructive to ourselves or others.

The way in which the therapist helps someone work through such feelings is by first forming a non-judgmental accepting relationship with the client.

This is not the same, however, as trying to be the person’s friend, as the therapist will also try to be calm and neutral, sometimes presenting difficult and unacceptable reality to him/her, and thereby often creating very stormy relations.
